A conference, to expand the horizons of mental health.

What is it?
The Nunchi Summit is a virtual mental health conference catered towards communities of immigrant origin. In the past, our Summit has featured mental health advocacy workshops, professional mentorship, and our signature Nunchi Lightning Talks event. This conference is open to all high school students, university students, and young professionals interested in mental health.

Summit Schedule
Below is our schedule for the Summer 2024 Nunchi Summit.
12:00 pm-12:10 pm — Opening Ceremony
12:10 pm-1:00 pm — Keynote Panel: Embracing and Accommodating Intersectionality
A discussion panel with Chinmayi Balusu (Founder and CEO @ Simply Neuroscience), Saúl (SJ) Urbina-Johanson (Clinical Research Coordinator @ Harvard University’s Stress & Development Lab), and Wathma Dissanayake (Student Clinician @ Bakersfield Behavioral Health Hospital and Clinical Psychology Doctoral Candidate @ Alliant International University-Fresno), moderated by Phil De Vera (Head of Programs @ Nunchi Health, Patient Care Coordinator @ Progeny Psychiatric Clinic), on the future of mental health for immigrant-origin youth and professional opportunities.
1:00 pm-1:20 pm — Workshop 1: Breakout Sessions
Two simultaneous discussion groups, guided by Nunchi Health facilitators, will explore topics related to the summit’s theme of intersectional identity: age/youth and immigrant-origin status, respectively. We invite all attendees to share their insights and experiences.
1:20 pm - 2:00 pm — Lunch Break
There will be two optional showings of the December 2022 TEDxYouth@SPSV presentation “‘Walang Hiya/Shameless’ Mental Health of Immigrant Children” by activist Thomas Caballero (duration 9:23).
2:00 pm-3:00 pm — Nunchi Lightning Talks
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm — Workshop 2: Community-Centered Tools for Mindfulness and Healing
Trained Nunchi facilitators will lead a workshop on mental wellness, story-sharing techniques, and more. Participants will be put in breakout rooms of 5-10 people; active participation will be expected!
4:30 pm-5:00 pm — Closing/Awards Ceremony
Remarks by the Executive Director of Nunchi Health and a brief survey, which is a requirement in order to be awarded the gift cards for participation.
5:00 pm-5:30 pm — Optional Social: Trivia
Nunchi Lightning Talks
The Nunchi Lightning Talks is our hallmark event for the Nunchi Summit. This is a participant-driven presentation series with a prize pool of $500+. This is an amazing opportunity to present your individual journey in mental health or the innovative mental health work that you do. Special recognition will be given to stories or works focused on mental health equity.
Who: All students, mental health professionals, or community health organization representatives are welcome to sign up.
What: Individuals deliver a 7-minute talk on a mental health topic or their mental health work. Presenters and attendees will be placed in one of five tracks:
Innovation and Technology: Showcase innovative solutions, apps, or platforms in technology related to mental health.
Nonprofit Initiatives: Highlight projects or initiatives dedicated to mental health.
Medicine and Clinical Insights: Present the latest research and clinical perspectives on mental health.
Personal Stories of Resilience: Share personal experiences with mental health challenges and their journey to resilience.
Policy and Advocacy: Highlight the current challenges and opportunities within policy and advocacy in shaping mental health initiatives.
Why: Presenters voted as the best presentation will be recognized during our awards ceremony and receive an award size of up to $75.

Nunchi Talks are an opportunity to share a 7-minute talk on a mental health-related story or topic. Speakers and attendees will be placed in one of six tracks based on indicated interest in the registration form.

To indicate interest in doing a presentation, please fill out the RSVP form (link found at the beginning of the document). To confirm your slot, you must email your slides to nunchihealth.programs@gmail.com by 6/15/24, EOD. Submissions after this deadline will not be able to participate.
