Nunchi Summit Fall 2024

A conference, to expand the horizons of mental health.

Our Fall 2024 Summit will take place on October 12, 2024. The theme for this summit will be Building Community in a Globalized World.

What is it?

The Nunchi Summit is a virtual mental health conference catered towards communities of immigrant origin. In the past, our Summit has featured mental health advocacy workshops, professional mentorship, and our signature Nunchi Lightning Talks event. This conference is open to all high school students, university students, and young professionals interested in mental health.

Summit Schedule

Below is our schedule for the Fall 2024 Nunchi Summit.

12:00 pm-12:10 pm — Opening Ceremony

12:10 pm-1:00 pm — Keynote Panel: Community Leadership for National and Global Mental Health Equity

AA panel discussion about community-building for mental health, featuring Nicholas Hargis (Congressional Aide to Anna Eshoo (D-CA) @ US House of Representatives), Hayoung Ahn (she/her) - MD Candidate at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Isha Weerasinghe (she/her) - Associate Director for Mental Health and Well-Being @ Center for Law and Social Policy, and Gisselle Reyes (she/her) - Master of Public Health Graduate @ Columbia University School of Public Health. It will be moderated by RC Sadoff (Research Program Coordinator @ Johns Hopkins Medicine, Head of Programs @ Nunchi Health).

1:00 pm-1:20 pm — Workshop 1: Breakout Sessions

Three simultaneous discussion groups, guided by Nunchi Health facilitators, will explore topics related to the summit’s theme of adaptive community-building, listed below. We invite all attendees to share their insights and experiences.

  • Mental Health Resources: Accessibility and Finding Appropriate Care in a Globalizing World

  • Building Bonds for Well-being and Growth: How Have Personal Experiences of Community Healing Shaped Your Well-being and Growth?

  • Using Global Connections to Build Diverse Communities: How Can We Create and Keep Communities that Include People from All Over the World?

1:20 pm - 2:00 pm — Lunch Break

There will be two optional showings of TED Talks relevant to the summit theme. The first is the November 2022 TEDxTemecula presentation ‘Belonging is not about fitting in’ by Lola Adeyemo (duration: 19:06) and the second is the March 2017 TEDxSFU presentation ‘Building Connections: How to Be A Relationship Ninja’ by Rosan Auyeung-Chen.

2:00 pm-3:00 pm — Nunchi Lightning Talks

The Nunchi Lightning Talks is our hallmark event for the Nunchi Summit. This is a participant-driven presentation series with a prize pool of $300+. This is an amazing opportunity to present your journey in mental health or the innovative mental health work that you do. 

3:00 pm - 4:30 pm — Workshop 2: Community-Centered Tools for Mindfulness and Healing

Trained Nunchi facilitators will lead a workshop on mental wellness, story-sharing techniques, and more. Participants will be put in breakout rooms of 5-10 people; active participation will be expected!

4:30 pm-5:00 pm — Closing/Awards Ceremony

Announcements of the Nunchi Talks winners will be made, followed by closing remarks by the Executive Director of Nunchi Health. Afterward, a brief survey will be sent out, which is a requirement to be awarded gift cards for participation.

5:00 pm-5:30 pm — Optional Social: Trivia

Nunchi Lightning Talks

The Nunchi Lightning Talks is our hallmark event for the Nunchi Summit. This is a participant-driven presentation series with a prize pool of $300+. This is an amazing opportunity to present your individual journey in mental health or the innovative mental health work that you do. Special recognition will be given to stories or works focused on mental health equity.

Who: All students, mental health professionals, or community health organization representatives are welcome to sign up. 

What: Individuals deliver a 7-minute talk on a mental health topic or their mental health work. Presenters and attendees will be placed in one of five tracks:

  1. Innovation, Technology, and Clinical Medicine: Showcase innovative solutions and research related to mental health

  2. Personal Stories of Resilience: Share personal experiences with mental health challenges and journeys to resilience

  3. Nonprofits and Advocacy: Highlighting the current challenges and opportunities within mental health initiatives

Why: Presenters voted as the best presentation will be recognized during our awards ceremony and receive an award size of up to $90.

FAQs

  • There is a $5 registration fee to attend the Nunchi Summit, but the payments will be refunded upon attendance at the event, and additional $10 gift cards will be sent to people who stay throughout the event, so participation is practically free. If you know you will not be able to attend the event more than 24 hours in advance, email us and we will issue a refund of your registration fee. You can also request to have the fee waived by registering for the summit and marking “I cannot make this payment right now” and then replying to our team when we follow up at the email address you inputted.

  • Nunchi Lightning Talks are an opportunity to share a 7-minute talk on a mental health-related story or topic. Speakers and attendees will be placed in one of three tracks based on indicated interest in the registration form.

  • To indicate interest in doing a presentation, please fill out the RSVP form. To confirm your slot, you must email your slides to nunchihealth.programs@gmail.com by 10/1/24, EOD. Submissions after this deadline will not be able to participate.

  • Yes. However, each representative from the same organization must register independently.
