What is it?

The Nunchi Fellowship is a selective training program for students to participate and lead mental health groups, advised by experts at Harvard Medical School, focused on mental health leadership for students of immigrant identity, background, or heritage. The Fellowship involves a series of interactive workshops. All sessions are virtual and participants commit to attending weekly sessions for 6 weeks. The program is designed for immigrant-background and international students, including overseas/international students, first- or second-generation Americans, and DACA students. Fellows will be awarded a $30 gift card for their active participation in all sessions.

The Fellowship team believes in the power of self-reflection and public service to others in mental healing. As a Nunchi Fellow, you will play a powerful role in teaching and guiding peers through mental health challenges and advancing the health of our communities. Throughout the fellowship, you will learn about facilitating mental health topics, better understand your healing journey, and support 5-6 other students. Graduated fellows have the opportunity to become facilitators, receiving $250 educational credits while empowering more students to find their healing stories.

Format

Our program runs for 7 weeks based on the school semester system. Every weekday evening, fellowship groups meet online for a 2-hour workshop. Each group has 5-6 peers of similar age, but in most cases, different schools. We currently offer programs for young adults enrolled in school, including high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Our curriculum is designed for students of immigrant identity, background, or heritage, including overseas/international students, first- or second-generation Americans, and DACA students.

  • Applicants must be:

    • Currently enrolled in a high school, college, or graduate program,

    • Above age 13 and below age 30 as of September 1, 2023,

    • Of immigrant background or heritage (this would include overseas/international students, first- or second-generation Americans, and DACA students),

    • Available to attend all fellowship sessions throughout the semester.

  • Our goal is for participants to build a community to learn about our mental health and brainstorm ways to give back to our community. We are an interactive educational curriculum focused on mindfulness and community action. Though not an expectation, many of our students have come back to become trained facilitators or mental health advocates/professionals in their communities.
